About me

Picture

Matthew Fuirst, PhD

Associate Wildlife Biologist

I am currently a manager and postdoctoral researcher at Birds Canada. I also am a lecturer in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph. My current research is conducted in Algonquin Provincial Park, and Long Point, Ontario.

Research

My research aims to understand animal movements and foraging behaviour using various biologging tools and long-term monitoring data. My current work investigates the causes and consequences of dispersal in a declining population of Canada jays. I am also examining the range-wide mechanisms of productivity in Common Loons. Previously I have studied the foraging ecology of herring gulls, black-backed gulls, and Florida Scrub-Jays.

Latest News

I was awarded the Early Career Research Award by the Canadian Society of Ornithologists.

A recent paper on the survival of juvenile Canada jays was accepted in Ornithology!
